| Iggy | The great thing about this showcase is hearing
different interpretations of already familiar songs. I loved Nancy's version
of this song better than the original. "Firefly" was able to
put her heart into this song and from an audience perspective, I could
feel both the mood and the meaning she was conveying.
"In My Room" was an excellent song for Nancy to chose, both
displaying her vocals and her guitar playing. |
| Christina | What a lovely interpretation! Nancy, this is really good and so very inspiring. You've made this song your own, imprinting your unique style on it. I hope it's part of your set in any gigs you do.Simply wonderful. |
| Kneena | A wonderful interpretation of music, feeling and meaning. You seem to really bring all your own emotions and feelings to this song! That makes all the difference in the world. You can hear it with the sound of your voice and the way you play your guitar.Your heart lingers through this song. Very nice! |
| Kris-S | Nancy G: I have always been a huge fan of the 12 string guitar and I enjoyed the way you played it in your selection. In fact when I heard you perform I went back in my mind to a little coffeehouse in college I use to perform at. There was one woman who used it exclusively and I always hung around to listen to her set. Very nice song. It's obvious you enjoy playing it. |
| Nigel | I like the sound of the 12-string on this tune.
I also like the quality of your voice. I'm a fan of the original recording
too. I think you did a good job adapting the song to your strengths. Lots
of passion in your vocal. I like that! If I have to give you some criticism
(and what good would this process be if we gave no criticism), it sounds
like your guitar is not completely in tune. |
| EED (Emily) | I'm such a sucker for the simple guitar and vocal combo. Great guitar work. Beautiful smokey voice. Great interpretation. |
| David T | As usual, Nancy's guitar playing and vocals are impeccable. I'm not familar with this song, but Nancy does a great performance that makes it enjoyable. The addition of percussion would really round out this song. Hey Nancy, go buy a drummer...everyone should own at least one! :-) |
| Tim W | Nancy This is my favorite Beaach Boy song of all time, I do believe. I play it too from time to time. My guess is that your room, and your 12 string, have provided you some solace in recent times. It shows in the passion and soul of your performance. Thanks for the window into your world. |
| Todd | I love the sparse arrangement for this song (not being the biggest Beach boys fan of all time). The 12 string works well with Nancy's style, and her playing is lovely. The only negative I'll say is the vocal tends to want to go for rock 'n' roll while the instrumentation is mellllo. Creates kind of an odd contrast, but hey, that could lead to an honest to goodness new musical style, ya know?. Would like to see her perform this in a coffee shop somewhere... |
| James | Ok, I admit that it took me probably 3 listens
to get it. I'm not a big folkie kinda guy. I love the original. But after
a little sinking in this the version I'll remember. It's haunting. Great
guitar playing and vocals! I love the reworking of the chord structure.
Excellent! |
| Meikow | I love the changes that you brought to this song. Your 12 string sounds so sweet here. Nothing to criticize here. Just a good, pure, sweet rendition. |
| Markus | What a beautiful interpretation
of this song which I did not know before. Thanks for introducing it to me! I wonder how to interpret the lyrics. I think one could read them that someone tells about a private, secret place where he finds some comfort. But if you read the words like coming from someone who is just a prisoner in this room and can not leave it, the lyric's meaning becomes totally different... Your gently sad, beautiful singing makes me think that my latter interpretation is the one the song was meant to have. But I might be totally wrong. |
| Hazelglow | So simple, but it works! Lovely textural qualities; it sounds like to me youre really familiar with performing making your voice intertwine with the guitar like that. Youve got really good dynamics in this performance, which is hard to do when theres no other instrumentation to help fake it for you! I just had a listen to the original; Id take your version anyday. You should add your unique fire-fly harmonies to it, and make it even more yours. :) |
| Hoaby | As far as I am concerned, Brian Wilson is a "must learn" for any song writer. "Pet Sounds" shall remain one of the greatest albums ever made. I love your rendition of this song. I felt a shiver up my legs when I heard it (and it wasn't just the cold ND winter causing it! Ha!) Thanks for the ear candy.....and like a child....I want more! |
| Solpig | OK..Don't laugh but I've never
heard the original. My only beach boyz connection is..I used to score dope
from the same guy B.W.'s son did. So...I can only review you which makes it tons easier. You have a great dramatic Folk voice.Your guitar playing is impeccable(12 string??)I've heard you on acidplanet ,and your definitely from my tribe.I would definitely listen to a second song from a vocalist with your performance whether or not it was a cover.Having no Idea how far you strayed from the original,I'll just leave it at you're really good! piggy |
| Dave C | Ive never really analyzed Beach Boys music until I sat down and listened to these 2 versions side by side with the lyrics in front of me. I suspect that this is Brian addressing his mental illness. If I listen to the 2 songs in that context I think your version conveys what Brian is trying to tell whereas the BBs version does not do that. Independent of all that baggage I just liked your version more than the original. |
